GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)

What is GRE? GRE stands for the Graduate Record Examination. It is a standardized test designed to measure the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills of candidates applying to graduate programs, such as master’s and doctoral degrees, in various fields of study.

Why is GRE Required? GRE scores are a critical component of the graduate school admissions process, serving as a common benchmark for evaluating candidates’ aptitude and potential for success in graduate-level academic studies. Many prestigious universities and graduate programs worldwide, including those in the USA, Canada, Europe, and beyond, require GRE scores as part of their admissions criteria.

GRE Exam Structure: The GRE General Test consists of three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Each section assesses different skills:

1. Verbal Reasoning: 2 sections, 20 questions per section (60 minutes total)
2. Quantitative Reasoning: 2 sections, 20 questions per section (70 minutes total)
3. Analytical Writing: 2 tasks, 1 “analyze an issue” task and 1 “analyze an argument” task (30 minutes per task)

Total Marks: The Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections are scored on a scale from 130 to 170, in one-point increments. The Analytical Writing section is scored on a scale from 0 to 6, in half-point increments.

Minimum Score: The minimum score required varies depending on the graduate program and institution to which you are applying. However, competitive graduate programs typically expect candidates to achieve scores in the range of 310 to 330 or higher.
